At least rap comes from the heart, not all rappers are bad. in fact i truly enjoy rap and think you have been very immature to just put rap sucks on this, maybe if you put "i don't like rap" or something would've been more mature. this is not a hate comment and i don't like how you acted so sarcastic in your description. I think that maybe you should go and honestly listen to rap again, hear its beauty, and get a life. Sorry, but its the hard truth

Hahaha
Back in highschool i was looked down on and bullied because i listened to rap
one day i woke up and had had enough of the pressure i was feeling
i went to school in the morning and before even the first class some dickhead in a group of people yelled out "Rap sucks!"
so i walked up to the group, asked who said it and punched the cunt in the face
since that day i never got teased about my music choice again

i still listen to good quality hip hop and it still bothers me a little when people think of all rap as something like 50cent or lil wayne, i hate them
rap has been ruined by all the stupid candy-rap on tv and the radio
most people are completely ignorant of real rap and good hip hop

Yeah, I like to discuss and I like to do it in a respectful and educated matter so someone may listen and offer an intelligent response. It's all in the hope that something good will come out of it. :) And frankly I've just gotten really frustrated finding all these stamps and whatnot about how "rap sucks."

It's one thing to state a personal opinion such as "I think rap sucks," or "I hate rap." But it is another thing entirely to say "rap sucks" which is sounds an awful lot like you're trying to state a fact. You can't define what it is using words which carry connotations. Phrases such as "rap is just fast talking" is equated to "guitar playing is just plucking strings." Those are not accurate definitions. Even using the word "just" carries a connotation of something which doesn't involve effort or talent.

Then it is taken to another level when others say negative, and in some cases racial, remarks about those who listen to a specific genre of music. I have heard that rap is only listened to by "ghetto parasites" and metal is only listened to by "satan worshipping emos." Both statements which would take a discussion like this totally out of context and are most likely untrue. I listen to rap and I am an educated black, teenage girl who is not inclined to be promiscuous, smoke weed, join a gang, or use a gun to harm another human being. And I grew up in the Bronx which is where hip hop and rap where born.

Generalizations are a dangerous thing. All rap is not about sex, drugs, money or other offensive subject matter. Broaden your horizons people and you will discover there is a whole plethora of good rap out there. If you don't care to listen to more of it, that's your right. But you have to know you can't go around stating false "facts" when you have nothing to back it up. Know what you're talking about before you go to battle because knowledge is your friend.

And whether people choose to accept it or not, rap is a genre of music. (I must have missed the day when they were handing out certificates which made people experts on all thing music.) Just because it doesn't necessarily require instruments doesn't disqualify it as music. You have to think back when rap was created, blacks were living in poverty and couldn't even afford to buy instruments so they had to use what they had on hand. They expressed their experiences through rhythm and poetry. Today, it has shifted to material possessions and sexual desires, but that is only a subset. Due to higher up people not wanting people to be enlightened and positive, this is what the mainstream is exposed to. (Corporate evil at work, but that's a whole different story of conspiracy.) Other genres glorify the same things. One example is rock. Even The Beatles had that one song about LSD.

For that matter, while I personally don't listen to The Beatles, not because I don't like them but just because I've simply never listened to them, I won't go around and declare that they suck. In their own respective genre, they were musical legends and pioneers and they deserve their credit. Therefore, pioneers such as Tupac and Biggie have their respective place in the history of rap music.

And probably one of the most awful and stupid arguments I hear is "rap is the reason the world is so fucked up." Hmmm, now that doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Rap was created in the 80's and the world already had problems with violence, drugs, sex and racism before it came into existence. Remember WWI and II? Remember the AIDS epidemic? And it's ridiculous to blame the current state of the world on any one factor, especially one so small as music. Let's place blame on more credible factors like bad parenting or the idea of racial superiority just to name two.

And while I do still have a lot more to say, namely about appropriation and sampling as well as other things, I think I've said enough for now.

Pretty good description and rebuttal on the genre rap. Now I have to agreed that rap does suck, however it only suck due to the get rich quick motives.

Rap during the 90s was more real compare to the recent ones. A lot of the songs then are just a form of poetry about the artist's life and the problems that surrounds them. Now a days it is just a bunch of ignorant African Americans who choose to make up a bunch of songs with catchy beats just to earn some money behind. Yeah, that is pretty much the main motiff for making music; but I the songs from the 90s have some heart and hard work to it.

As far as I know, the people who say rap sucks might as well concider the other type of music that rap was inspired from to be bad (Metal, say that genre suck to the face of Iron Maiden). I salute you for presenting this intellengent argument to a group of people who believe rap is terrible, in spite of having any knowledge of the genre in general.
